Amazing Facts - World Records 2007, Unbelievable facts, Interesting Facts

Around 15,000 children were shown flowing their kites over the Gaza Strip in a bid to set a new world record for the most kites flown simultaneously. The seemingly simple act raised cheers amongst Palestinians, who have suffered the bitterness of poverty and conflict for decades.

Kites were flown at the golden beach under the supervision of a United Nations humanitarian agency.

Adnan Abu Hasna, the spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency in Gaza said, "Today they enter the Guinness World Record but the most important thing is that they grabbed the record from a developed country like the People's Republic of China and it's not a small country -- China's population is nearly 1500 times greater than the population of Gaza"

The previous record, 10,465, was set in April in Weifang City, China, according to the Guinness World Records.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency youth center in the Gaza Strip had reported damages to its camp hours before the event but that did not prevent participants from flying their kites all over the clear blue Mediterranean skies.

UNRWA looks after Palestinian refugees from wars with Israel and their descendants who make up around half of Gaza's 1.5 million populations.
